The History of the Claiborne County Historical &
Genealogical Society
The first organizational meeting of the Claiborne
County Historical & Genealogical Society took
place in April 1982. The Charter & By-Laws were
established, sent to the State of Tennessee and
registered in July 1982.
It has now been over 20 years since the founding of
the CCHGS.
Our Society has accomplished many tasks. We have
aided in the registering of many historical sites
to the Tennessee Historical Register. This Society
has published "The People's History of Claiborne
County, Tennessee", and more recently, "The
Claiborne County, Tennessee Pictorial History".
Many of our members have produced books to
preserve our history of Claiborne
County, Tennessee.
We have placed several historical markers around
Claiborne County. We continue to restore the Old
Jail (see picture), and to restore it to a working
museum.
